Ballistics Image Analysis and Recognition System
Comparing cartridge cases or bullets to identify the ones that are fired
from the same firearm is a time consuming and painstaking task that requires
continuous attention. When the number of evidences to be examined and the
archive of evidences are large, than manual comparison process becomes
virtually impossible.
BALISTIKA is a product to solve that problem. Using BALISTIKA, one can match
cartridge cases and bullets automatically, at a high matching performance. |
The main advantage of BALISTIKA over ballistic identification systems that
use two-dimensional images for identification is its ability of
three-dimensional scanning of the surfaces. The visibility of tool marks is
highly dependent on illumination and those 2D images do not necessarily
carry the full three-dimensional (3D) information, which is very helpful for
matching. Considering the necessity of 3D information for the success of
ballistic identification, TÜBİTAK UZAY have developed its own 3D shape
extraction system. Thanks to computer controlled positioning equipment, the
user can control the imaging process and the optical system can be focused
automatically. High-resolution images of the surfaces are kept along with
the 3D data, that is, the actual shape of the surface. The algorithms
developed by UZAY, match cartridge cases and bullets based on the shape of
the surfaces. Availability of 3D information also facilitates visual
verification by the operator, because the operator can carry a virtual light
over the surfaces by means of the mouse immitating the actual evidence under
a comparison macroscope.
The fact that BALISTIKA keeps the information in interrelated databases of
bullets, cartridge cases, firearms, incidences and individuals, makes it
more than a ballistic identification system. Since BALISTIKA is designed as
a modular system, operating on LAN, based on client-server architecture, it
is highly scalable, that is, its capacity is extendable any time depending
of the load of work. The intuitive and user-friendly interface makes period
of instruction short. |
